Rekey or replace your locks: which do you need?

Safe Choice Locksmiths · Brisbane Northside

The first step

Rekeying changes the key that operates a suitable existing lock. Replacement changes the hardware. Rekeying may suit lost keys or a move; damaged, worn or unsuitable locks may need replacement.

Choose rekeying for a key-control problem

If the hardware is working well but you do not know who holds copies of the key, ask about rekeying. The cylinder is changed internally to operate with a different key, so the previous key no longer operates that rekeyed cylinder.

Rekeying does not automatically affect every door at the property. Identify all relevant front, back, side and screen-door locks when booking, and confirm exactly which will be changed.

Consider replacement for a hardware problem

A faulty mechanism, damaged housing or unsuitable lock may need replacement. Rekeying alone does not repair a broken handle, fix a damaged frame or improve the physical strength of existing hardware.

A planned upgrade can also change how you use the entrance, such as adding compatible keyless hardware. The door material, existing holes and daily access needs should be checked before choosing a product.

Can all the doors use one key?

Compatible locks can often be keyed alike, but different keyways or hardware types may prevent it. Ask for an assessment of the whole set. A one-key arrangement should be confirmed from the actual locks rather than promised from a photo of one door.

Compare the full scope, not just a headline price

  • How many cylinders or locks are included?
  • Are call-out, labour, parts and new keys included?
  • Will any hardware or door adjustment also be needed?
  • How many copies of the new key will you receive?
  • Which old keys will still operate any remaining locks?

This guide covers common situations. The right repair or entry method depends on the actual door and lock.
