Locksmithing 101
Avoid locksmith scams: checks before you book
Being locked out can make it tempting to book the first number you find. A few clear questions can help you understand who will attend and what you are agreeing to. An unusually low advertised price needs clarification, but price alone does not establish whether a business is trustworthy.
Identify the business and the person attending
Ask for the business name, a callback number and who will carry out the work. Check that the website, booking details and invoice identify the same provider, or explain any subcontracting arrangement. Read recent customer feedback for information about communication, the work performed and how charges were explained.
A mobile locksmith does not need a retail shop to attend your property. Safe Choice Locksmiths operates as a mobile service across North Brisbane, with no customer-facing shopfront. The important distinction is an accurately described service rather than a claimed branch in every suburb.
Clarify charges before the visit
Describe the door and lock, whether you can get inside, and any damage or failed attempts. Ask what the call-out includes, how labour is charged and whether parts, keys or after-hours fees are additional. Request an estimate in writing where practical and ask what may change after inspection.
A changed diagnosis can legitimately change the work required. Ask the locksmith to explain the finding, the proposed method and the revised cost before you agree. Do not assume that every lock can be opened without damage or that every failed mechanism can be repaired.
Check credentials relevant to the job
Ask about qualifications, relevant insurance and any licence required for the work you are booking. For regulated security work in Queensland, you can use the Office of Fair Trading licence register to check the provider’s details. Match the name and licence information supplied; a logo or membership claim on a website is not a substitute for checking.
Keep a record of the agreed work
Confirm which doors will be opened, repaired or rekeyed and what new hardware or keys are included. Ask for an itemised invoice and retain relevant messages. For entry assistance, be ready to show that you are authorised to access the property; explain when calling if your identification is locked inside.
For practical first steps, read what to do when you are locked out. For a planned booking, contact Ricky with your suburb and lock photos.
